Not Just Billfishing In Guatemala

Although the main attraction for anglers in is the huge numbers of aggressive Pacific Sailfish that are present all year round - there are also good opportunities for many other species of gamefish in the calm blue waters off the coast.
In fact inshore fishing can be a perfect day that offers the prospect of sub-tropical saltwater fish as well as what would be normally considered bluewater only billfishing.
At times the warm ocean eddies can push in as close as two miles from the dock in Guatemala, so while your main quarry may be aggressive amberjacks in nearshore waters, it is possible at the same time to come across the sail of a billfish languishing on the surface within plain view of the marina.
Most inshore fishing is done from local pangas or centre console boats in the 17-23ft class, as light tackle or fly tackle is generally the order of the day.
Close to the harbour entrance any early morning you will also see local fishermen dropping handlines baited with squid trying to catch snapper (or pargo as they are called in the Pacific) for the table or market.
Inshore waters offer the prospect of the much sought after Roosterfish. Although the immediate coastline does not provide ideal conditions for fishing for these gamefish, they can be found usually trolling around areas of strong current within a few miles of the Pez Vela marina.
Typically Roosterfish are pursued with either livebait or soft imitations cast around hard structure or rock formations. As we don't
have any significant outcroppings or high reef for bait to concentrate close to shore, we resort to trolling either ballyhoo or rapala lures and aim to cover more ground.
This results in lower reported catch rates than other locales - but the Roosters are around, and can be caught - it does offer a less expensive option for a charter day or "rest day" (or half day), with a chance of bagging another trophy. Like most other members of the Jack family, it is not considered to be a good eating fish. Another exciting and productive way to fish the inshore waters of is to "chase the shrimp boats".
Typically there are four or five shrimpers working within a few miles of the harbor, and the local captains will be happy to contact them to find out when they are lifting their nets - as when they do this, the nets are always followed by large schools of competitive and aggressive fish - predominantly amberjacks.
If you are looking for nonstop fishing action either on conventional or the fly - that will leave you with a very sore arm at the end of the day - then this is a great and very economical alternative for a full of half day fishing.
Inshore fishing for either roosterfish or jacks is often done from pangas or small open fishermen/centre console boats that are less capable of making the run offshore in search of the larger pelagic fish.

The Famous Guatemala Antigua Coffee

In the high altitudes of lies the origin of Antigua Coffee. This perfectly situated growing land is 3000 feet above sea level and located between three volcanoes. These volcanoes have indirectly contributed to the minerals and nutrients of the land around them, making them the ideal place to cultivate coffee plants. The taste of the coffee is smooth, mild and the flavor is balanced by the chocolaty touch present in the coffee. Some of the coffee lovers find the bitterness of this coffee a bit too high but most of them are fascinated by the fragrance of cocoa in it.
The coffee plants are grown in shades on high altitude in the Guatemalan Highlands. Large trees provide shade to the coffee plants and prolong the period of growth. Reflexión en Navidad

Una Vez Más Hemos llegado a la Navidad, celebrando el nacimiento del niño Jesús, lo que nos trae a reflexionar sobre el verdadero significado de esta fecha. El mensaje es que debemos prescindir de odios, egoísmos, avaricias, conflictos entre seres humanos, y buscar, en vez, que reine la paz y la buena voluntad entre todos.
Hoy dedico esta columna a una reflexión más profunda sobre la Navidad, y me referiré a la connotada autora estadounidense Mary Baker Eddy, quien vivió a finales del siglo antepasado y escribió el aclamado libro Ciencia y salud. Millones de copias de este libro se han vendido en más de 20 idiomas, y en él, la señora Eddy nos habla del Cristo en su verdadero significado. Según la teóloga, el Cristo reina en todos nosotros cuando expresamos benevolencia, caridad, amor y buenas obras. Ella nos dice que si los seres humanos comprendiésemos nuestra verdadera fuente espiritual, que es de donde vienen múltiples bendiciones, podríamos superar la lucha mundana de una mejor forma y lograr una paz espiritual interior que erradicase tanto la desarmonía, como los síntomas de enfermedad.
En el glosario de Ciencia y salud, la señora Eddy, quien fundó la primera Universidad Metafísica en Boston, Massachusetts, nos explica que Jesús es el más alto concepto de la idea divina del hombre y enfatiza que, al igual que Jesús, todos estamos hechos a la imagen espiritual y semejanza de Dios. Nos dice que somos la plena representación de un Dios que es amor puro, sabiduría, vida e inteligencia suprema; Dios como Padre, Jesús como hijo. Dios como el gran Yo Soy, el omnipresente, omnisapiente, y nos muestra a Jesús como el más alto tipo de divinidad que se manifestó en la carne.
Son fascinantes los conceptos metafísicos que nos da la señora Eddy en su libro para comprender la verdadera hermandad que Jesucristo nos vino a enseñar. La señora Eddy aduce que no somos muchas mentes, sino una sola “Mente”, y por lo tanto no debemos estar en discordia entre nosotros. Al comprender que somos un solo “Espíritu”, uno con Dios, se armonizan nuestras vidas. El efecto de Ciencia y salud en nuestra comprensión sobre el origen espiritual de Jesús es revolucionario y pretende un cambio de paradigma en nuestra forma de ver la misión del Mesías y de vernos a nosotros mismos y a la Humanidad. Debemos, finalmente, comprender que somos seres “espirituales” viviendo una experiencia material, y no al contrario.
Celebrar la Navidad solo para comprar regalos o para quemar cuetes, comer un buen tamal a las 12 de la noche o darnos abrazos, no es suficiente. La Navidad debería durar todo el año, para expresar constantemente amor al prójimo; lo que debería ser la verdadera misión de nuestras vidas. Les deseo a todos una feliz Navidad y un próspero Año Nuevo 2010.
El Arco de Santa Catalina
El Arco de Santa Catalina, en Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, recibirá a
cientos de guatemaltecos y turistas en la fiesta de fin de año.
Los guatemaltecos se aprestan a descansar,
divertirse, disfrutar del fin de año y darle la
bienvenida al 2010. Hoteles y centros recreativos
han preparado fiestas, cenas de gala,
conciertos y actividades para adultos, niños.
de cinco días y cuatro noches; la fiesta de gala del 31 de diciembre y espectáculo de luces. Las
festividades continúan el 1 y 2 de enero. Los parques Xetulul y Xocomil tienen capacidadn para atender 20 mil personas por día. Chajón dijo que los afiliados pueden llegar a los parques en horas hábiles, aunque no se hospeden en el lugar. Incluso afirmó que quienes no hayan renovado su carné pueden asistir, ya que se les da un pase especial. También el centro recreativo
Valle Dorado, en Zacapa, ofrece paquetes de tres días y dos noches. La noche del 31 celebrarán
la llegada del 2010 con un espectáculo de luces.
En Antigua
La ciudad colonial también prepara su gala. Para esas fechas se registra cien por cien de ocupación en los hoteles, informó Luis Reyna, presidente del Comité de Autogestión Turística.
Las fiestas de hoteles y discotecas se combinan con celebraciones en la Calle del Arco de Santa
Catalina y frente a la municipalidad. En esa ciudad, el Porta Hotel Antigua (que cuenta con 110 habitaciones) tiene preparada una cena de gala y una fiesta temática con motivos del Circo
de la Alegría. El Soleil Antigua combina cena, baile y queman de fuegos artificiales a media noche. Soleil del Pacífico, en Puerto San José, Escuintla, prepara una cena y baile de gala
en la playa; la temática es la cultura egipcia. En tanto, el Porta Hotel del Lago, en Panajachel,
Sololá hará su fiesta de gala al estilo italiano, informó Vittorio Sanchinelli, gerente de mercadeo.
En la capital, el Camino Real ofrece una fiesta que representará la película Casa Blanca, y Hotel
Vista Real, una cena degala Premium.
Tradiciones de fin de año
Después de la Nochebuena y la Navidad, los
guatemaltecos participan en otras actividades,
que con el tiempo se han popularizado, entre
estas la visita a los altares en iglesias y la procesión
de la Virgen de La O en Antigua Guatemala,
Sacatepéquez.
